Luxury fashion powerhouse, Louis Vuitton, led the charge when it came to promoting sustainable fashion and did so by dressing over a dozen attendees in previously-worn looks. These looks came from past collections dating back to the Fall 2014 fashion season. Louis Vuitton’s mix and match of upcycled styles showcases that even major luxury brands don’t mind supporting the sustainable fashion movement.

“Never has it been more important to show that creations should be made to last,” explained Nicolas Ghesquiére, Louis Vuitton’s artistic director of women’s collections. The Met Gala, one of the most closely watched nights of fashion and a symbol of “what’s to come” in the industry, was the perfect place to make a statement in support of sustainability. “There is no better feeling than to know your designs will live on,” said Ghesquière. “While my role as an artistic director is to constantly create, the chance to return to previous collections and designs for this year’s Met Gala was joyful.”

Although Louis Vuitton filled the red carpet with upcycled looks, there was one star who made headlines across the globe for her previously worn gown: Kim Kardashian.

Kim Kadashian made history at the 2022 Met Gala when she strutted the red carpet in Marilyn Monroe’s iconic gown from her “Happy Birthday Mr. President” performance for John F. Kennedy. Featuring thousands of hand-sewn Sworovski crystals, this world famous gown was bought by Ripley’s Believe It or Not for the hefty price of 4.8 million dollars. Now, it’s being worn over sixty years later by reality tv’s biggest star.

While Kim Kardashian’s Met Gala look isn’t the epitome of sustainable fashion (we doubt anyone will get a chance to wear this gown again,) her choice to forgo a new look that would likely never be worn even a second time is still promoting the movement. So, how did these sustainable styles stack up against the rest? Let’s take a look!

Kim Kardashian

Kim Kardashian’s choice to wear one of Marilyn Monroe’s gowns is easily the most obvious sustainable fashion moment from this year’s Met Gala. Her eye-catching evening gown immediately caught media attention and skyrocketed the idea of rewearing past fashion looks on the red carpet into the mainstream.

Although it might not be possible for just anyone to get their hands on an iconic piece of fashion history like Marilyn’s “Happy Birthday Mr. President” gown, this bold choice can still spark inspiration. Who knows? Maybe we’ll be seeing more iconic looks from fashion’s past on red carpets in the future.

Emma Stone

Unlike Kim Kardashian’s publicly celebrated nuptials, Emma Stone’s 2020 wedding to Dave McCary was kept under wraps. It wasn’t even until eagle-eyes fans spotted her with a wedding ring that the world even knew she was married. Now that her secret marriage is more than out, Emma Stone had no hesitations rewearing a Louis Vuitton dress that was near and dear to her heart: her reception dress.

This never-before-seen white cocktail dress featured wide, sheer straps and fluffy feathers draped around the bottom of the skirt. The sheer straps give a strapless illusion, making this dress perfect for dancing during a wedding reception! Although this dress was designed in the past, the feathers make it fall perfectly into 2022 fashion trends.

Hoyeon Jung

This Squid Game actress sprung into the spotlight after the hit show made waves across Netflix in 2021. We’ve been seeing more and more of Hoeyon Jung at award shows across the world and now she’s taking over the Met Gala! Inspired by oil paintings from the late 1800s, this suede cutout mini dress from the Louis Vuitton’s Resort 2017 collection was an obvious choice for this year’s “Gilded Glamour” dress code.

Sophie Turner

Pregnancy style has never been a challenge for Sophie Turner and the Met Gala was no exception! The Game of Thrones actress chose to prioritize comfort on the red carpet and wore an embroidered black gown from the Louis Vuitton Resort 2016 collection. Her deep red locks and dark makeup add an edgy touch to this look that brings it closer to the couture, red carpet styles that we’re used to seeing.

Joe Jonas

A couple that’s styled together, stays together! Along with his wife, Joe Jonas embraced sustainable fashion by wearing a womenswear tailcoat that debuted at the Louis Vuitton Spring 2022 show. The structure and silhouette of this tailcoat, along with the white lace train, make it fit the “Gilded Glamor” dress code perfectly!

Cynthia Erivo

Like Joe Jonas, Cynthia Erivo selected a dress and cape from Louis Vuitton’s Spring 2022 collection. Aside from the historical references that made this look ideal for this year’s theme, “In America: An Anthology of Fashion,” Cynthia Erivo embraced sustainable fashion to a new level. Her one-of-a-kind headpiece was specifically crafted with sustainability in mind and was created with reused Louis Vuitton fabric cut-offs.

Chloe Grace Moretz

We love a celeb who understands the assignment! Chloe Grace Moretz wasn’t afraid to wear an unconventional, gender-bending look on this year’s Met Gala carpet. Her embellished tailcoat from the Louis Vuitton Spring 2018 collection is the epitome “Gilded Glamour.”

Phoebe Dynevor

Phoebe Dynevor not only rewore a gown from the Louis Vuitton Spring 2022 collection, but she reworked the design as well! The original look, which was previously worn by Agathe Rousselle at the London Film Festival in October 2021, was given a new life and silhouette for the prestigious Met Gala.
