Over the Top Promposal That Are BEYOND Extra

Promposals have taken the world by storm over the last 20 years. What used to be a simple question has turned into a whole event all its own. A lot of people think they’re too much; prom is enough and asking someone in an outrageous way is too much. Well, who asked them?

We LOVE promposals and we think you should too! We know that they may seem extra and unnecessary. But if you’re into the idea of asking your date in some wild and crazy way to go to prom with you, then we say YES! And here’s how to do it.

Promposals first got their publicity when a Dallas news station did a story on the crazy and creative ways people were asking others to prom. The story caught on and many other places debuted stories in the same tone. Then Laguna Beach: The Real OC happened and everyone saw promposals air on TV. After that, it was on.

Promposals have been getting bigger and bigger every year since and we love the trend. It’s over the top, but shouldn’t the last big event celebrating your high school career be this way?

We’ve gathered a list of some great ideas for promposals below and we hope you find one that inspires you to get your date to say yes!

It’s not the only way to ask someone, but it is the most delicious. Food-based asks are a sure-fire way to put a smile on your potential date’s face as well as pretty much ensure a yes.

If your potential date is a donut lover, there are many shops now that offer a dozen to go that will spell out the word prom in sprinkles or icing and you can add a cute check yes or no to the inside of the box. Donut-based asks are trendy right now so we are confident your date at least partially is hoping for this.

Donuts might not be their thing, so chocolate might be your next best bet. Chocolate comes in a few different forms: dark, white, or milk so there is something for everyone. We have seen chocolatiers lately taking special requests for chocolate-covered strawberries decorated in bow ties and a tux. You could probably also request a lace or lattice pattern to resemble a dress. Your promposal is sure to shine with a sweet treat decorated for the big night.

Not everyone loves sweets, and that’s ok. Pizza with pepperonis, meat or plant-based, can be used to spell out prom and the box could be specially ordered to ask the question on the inside or out. Make sure to know your date’s favorite pizza place before ordering or asking, it could be a real tragedy if you get the one with the sauce they hate!

You could ask your potential partner out on a date to their favorite restaurant to ask them to prom. First off, it’s their favorite restaurant so you’re already putting the odds in your favor because they will for sure be in a good mood.

At the end of dinner, order dessert and have the waiter (of course you’ve set this up ahead of time) bring out a plate with “prom?” written in chocolate sauce on it next to the sweet treat. This takes a bit of planning so your future partner in crime will be touched by the gesture and happy with the meal. It’s a guaranteed winner.

We can’t finish this section without at least mentioning the idea of a special order fortune cookie. If your future date is a lover of Chinese food, then a fortune cookie is a really creative and special way to ask. Not only do they get a promposal that took time to think of and order then wait for the cookie, but they also get a cookie so it’s a win-win.

Anytime you’re able to get an animal lover’s pet involved in a promposal, you definitely should. We can’t help but swoon over the idea of a dog running into the room with a sign or balloon attached to their collar with a cute note and maybe a single rose. Or wearing a specially made t-shirt that asks the question for you. Even if your date wasn’t expecting you to ask them, how can they say no to their favorite canine?

Another great idea is one many of us have already seen. On Laguna Beach, the first season, Morgan gets asked to prom when her date, Gary, leaves a pool full of goldfish in her room. Her date made a sign above it that read: “of all the fish in the sea, prom with me?” Seriously you guys, it’s sweet and romantic.

Another great idea would be to use the colors for your school if you don’t know their favorite color or want to tie into the date a little more. Either way, it’s a great way to ask someone to be your date while also giving them a souvenir to take home and revel in the grand gesture for a few extra days.

If you want to ensure that your promposal is sweet and personal, try tying in your future date’s favorite movie or show. Friends is having a real comeback moment in pop culture right now, and there are so many quotes and phrases to choose from, you are sure to find a winner to tie into your big question.

Lady and the Tramp is a classic kid’s movie about two dogs who fall for each other, and we also love the idea of tying this movie into a sweet promposal. The iconic spaghetti scene in this movie doesn’t necessarily need to be re-created, but using this scene for reference or inspiration is sure to be a hit with your date. It’s such a sweet moment in cinema and who can resist two dogs that love each other? No one. The answer is no one.

We know this next idea gets a little overused but we still love the idea of a whole cue card moment like in Love, Actually. We could just die thinking of someone showing up outside our house with music and giant note cards that they flip one by one to reveal a really sweet note about ourselves and then finish up by asking us to go to prom with them. It’s such a romantic gesture and we know it’ll be a hit.

We know that your date will be thrilled at the idea of a flash mob just for them. Who wouldn’t want to be the reason a bunch of random strangers came together in a very open space in front of even more strangers just so someone could ask you to prom. It’s wild and crazy and we know your date will approve, even if they are a bit embarrassed by all the attention. It is just a fun story they will have forever after this so we say go big or go home.

These are all crazy ideas that we are sure will go down in the promposal record books. We do know, however, that these ideas aren’t for everyone. Not everyone likes over the top, public displays of affection and that’s ok too. In cases such as these, we recommend scaling back the ask but still showing some sort of gesture so your date will feel special.

It could be a promposal that takes place in their home so they don’t feel put out by the public attention, or it could be something as simple as just walking up to them in between classes to ask them if they would like to be your date to prom as much as you would like to be theirs. We know this is the right move for some people so don’t be afraid to just go for it.
