The pageant world is always changing. Trends start and fall off, titleholders win and pass on their crowns, and new competitions appear out of nowhere. Although we’ve seen continuous change as time goes on, the past several years have brought monumental changes to the pageant industry in terms of diversity and celebrating different standards of beauty.
Before Zozibini Tunzi, Cheslie Kryst, and Kaleigh Garris made history as the first Black Miss Universe trio under IMG, numerous Black women came before them to pave the way towards this accomplishment. During Black History Month, we want to celebrate some of these inspirational women and their roles in redefining pageantry.
